Total Hours: 750 Hours
Program Length: 27 Weeks (Part-Time)
Delivery Method: In-Person, Synchronous Online, and Asynchronous Online Learning

Students will receive a complete kit with all materials required for the program and the state board exam.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Barbering Program consists of 750 clock hours and meets the requirements of the Virginia Board for Barbers and Cosmetology.

This program is designed to equip students with the knowledge and hands-on skills necessary to become a licensed barber in Virginia. Through a combination of theory and practical training, students will gain experience in all areas of barbering services.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Students will:

• Learn barbering techniques including cutting, tapering, shaving, and styling using clippers, razors, and shears

• Develop skills in client consultation, haircut design, and grooming services for hair and facial hair

• Apply sanitation, disinfection, and safety standards in accordance with state regulations and industry best practices

• Study anatomy, physiology, and skin and scalp analysis

• Understand fundamentals of hair coloring, scalp treatments, and facial care services

• Demonstrate professionalism through shop management and ethical practices

• Prepare for and successfully pass the state licensing exam

INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS

• Theory instruction will follow the approved curriculum.

• Online learning will be completed through Milady CIMA

• Required Textbook: Milady Barbering, 7th Edition

 

SCHEDULE (PART-TIME) 28 hours per week/Total of 27 weeks

In-Person Training

• Monday: 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM (8 hours, 30-minute break)

• Tuesday: 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM (8 hours, 30-minute break)

 

Online Learning

• Wednesday:

• 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM (Zoom – 1 hour) Synchronous

• 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM (CIMA – 3 hours) Asynchronous

• Thursday: 6:00 PM – 10:00 PM (CIMA – 4 hours) Asynchronous

• Friday: 6:00 PM – 10:00 PM (CIMA – 4 hours) Asynchronous

• 15-minute breaks daily for online learning

 

PROGRAM COMPLETION Upon successful completion of all required hours and coursework, students will be eligible to apply for and sit for the Virginia State Board Barbering Examination.

• Shampooing and scalp preparation

• Haircutting techniques: tapering, thinning, and shaping

• Use of clippers, razors, and shears (In Person)

• Blow-drying and styling with hand-held dryers (In person)

• Straight razor techniques

• Beard and mustache trimming

• Skin preparation and aftercare

🎨 5. Hair Coloring Services (50 Hours) (In Person)

• Hair color theory and application

• Temporary, semi-permanent, and permanent color

• Product selection and safety

• Client consultation and color analysis

• Anatomy and physiology

• Skin structure, types, and functions

• Skin disorders and diseases

• Scalp analysis and treatment techniques  

🧪 7. General Sciences (80 Hours) (Asynchronous 40 hours) In person 40 hours

• Bacteriology and microbiology

• Infection control: sanitation, disinfection, sterilization

• OSHA standards and workplace safety

• Safety Data Sheets (SDS)

• Cosmetic chemistry fundamentals

• Skin analysis and consultation

• Facial massage techniques (effleurage and manipulations)

• Cleansing, masks, and extraction techniques

• Use of machines and electrical equipment

• Manual facials and advanced treatments

• Basic Facials: 5

⏰ INSTRUCTIONAL SCHEDULE

• Practical Training: Monday and Tuesday 8am -4:30 pm with 30-minute break

• Theory Instruction: Synchronous and Asynchronous

• Cameras must be on during zoom.

Graduates of this program will be equipped with the technical skills, industry knowledge, and professional confidence needed to pass the state board exam and succeed as a licensed barber in Virginia.
